Making it to the Top

There are very few novelists who hit Olympic Gold in their career.  Those who do sell boatloads of books and make boatloads of money. Some of them stay at the top for years.  Others are gone in a flash. Same as Olympic athletes where some compete in multiple Olympics, others in only one.

It's the rest of the athletes and writers that I think of during any awards ceremonies...the ones who have achieved varying degrees of success in their chosen field but who may never reach the pinnacle.  But aren't they already winners?  They have a passion for the sport--or the written word--and are spending their time doing what they love.  Really, who can ask for more...
